Mitolo Jester Shiraz 2013

$55.00

Vineyard Notes
The vineyards are in the Willunga district in the southern end of McLaren Vale. The heavy grey loam soil over sandstone, intermixed with black Biscay clay, combined with a maritime climate, contribute to an even ripening period and the development of rich fruit flavours and ripe tannins.

Mitolo Jester Shiraz 2013

JH 94 points, WA 89 points (2012), Bronze Medal – 2014 Decanter World Wine Awards

Vintage Note
The 2013 vintage was a great one for us, producing outstanding wines full of bright, fresh flavour and excellent tannin structure. Winter rains were excellent and we began the season with soils at full water capacity, a rare event in these recent dry years. Summer was quite mild and dry to begin. The dry conditions then continued, and coupled with a small spike of heat in the second half of February made life a little stressful for the vines. We were given some respite however as the a small amount of rain together with some milder weather caused sugar levels in the fruit to plateau for a couple of weeks allowing us to take a bit more time. Overall, the quality of the wines is excellent.

Colour
Deep, dark red.

Nose
Pure and unobstructed by new oak, the nose is lifted with dark fruit flavours of blackberry, choc-mint, and anise. Dustings of white pepper spice, vanilla, and black olive tapenade provide an intriguing savoury counterpoint to the more primary fruit characters.

Palate
The palate is concentrated with a luscious rolling texture and packed with fresh blackberry, dark chocolate and liquorice flavours. The wine is juicy and plush with silky tannins that linger, providing a drying, savoury finish.

Harvest Date
March 2013.

Bottling Date
October 2014.

Cellaring
2-6 years.

Aging
Aged in used French oak for 18 months.

Style
Intense, textured and showing pure fruit flavours, Jester Shiraz is our baby G.A.M using the same barrels in which G.A.M was previously aged. Jester Shiraz is made to be upfront and approachable for early appreciation, and delivers excellent quality for the price.
Winemaker Notes
The Shiraz fruit for our Jester wine is crushed immediately after being delivered to us at the winery. We allow the skin and juice mix to warm naturally over a period of several days, after which it begins fermentation. The ferment is held cool, to retain the bright primary fruit characters which appear in the resulting wine. Following ferment we carefully press the wine to separate it from the skins.
Closure
Stelvin
Food Pairing Notes
Bistecca alla Fiorentina cooked over charcoal.
